Yesterday signalled the start of a new era for Emerge Pro Cycling - sponsored by GM-Gilbert-Tography, with the debut of the new climbing team. Previously the team was known to be a specialised sprinting squad, however with recent departures and arrivals the decision was made to attempt to be competitive in climbing aswell.
This meant the signing of Polish National team rider Pietrzyk (world rank: 43), and experienced domestique Huson, aswell as young hiller Vrba. The division 3 race, Vuelta Huesca was decided to be there debut's in Emerge colours, and the team couldnt have wished for a better start to the new era with Pietrzyk taking the win.
He commented "I feel great and really at home in my new surroundings. This team wanted me, and paid alot for my services, so now I want to repay the faith they have shown in me". He also added that the result was only because of his new teammates setting a high pace on the front of the peloton to bring the break away back, and no other team could rival the tempo at the front. This took a lot of the competition from his wheel and meant he had a clear route to the finish line
Emerge manager Blue Bolt said after the race "We are very proud of the new look and this just proves we can look forward to success. The last few weeks have been very stressful with negotiations for a number of riders but now we are seeing the results on the road."
The worrying thing for rival teams is the fact that Emerge are rumoured to be signing two more quality teammates to help on the tough climbs ahead. these are rumoured to be Retzlaff (JJL24SS) and Areosa (Greenride), however only time will tell if these deals actually happen. Its also expected that Vrba will be training with his new teammates on climbing, and Vincent Newlon will begin his rise to the top early next season.
On a side note, Emerge have let it slip that a primary goal of the team will be Monte Rosa tour early next season, with the GC a realistic target. Also dont be surprised to see them battling for the YC aswell.... Division 3 - BEWARE.... theres a new team on the mountains!!!
